What are the most common Computer Problems?

 

Just take a few minutes to read through our tips and you may save some money and time.  This is because you can actually solve some of them yourselves!

However, some of the solutions require professional knowledge.  Please exercise discretion before deciding what to do with your computer.

The top 3 computer problems:

 

When computer is switched-on:

Nothing appears on the monitor

Something appears on the monitor but cannot start Windows

Can start Windows but ……….

 

When computer is switched-on, nothing appears on the monitor

    1. Cannot hear the running fan, no light on the front panel
    2. Can hear the running fan, LED on the front panel is lighted.
    3. Can hear the running fan, LED on the front panel is lighted, and beep sound can be heard

When computer is switched-on, something appears on the monitor but cannot start Windows

    1. Black Screen (BIOS screen)
    2. Blue Screen
    3. Windows loading screen, but nothing else
    4. Computer keeps “re-starting

When computer is switched-on, can start Windows but....

    1. Unable to connect to USB Drives (Printer, Thumb Drive, MP3 etc...)
    2. Unable to connect to Internet (via RJ-45 / Ethernet card)
    3. Unable to connect to internet (Starhub Broadband)
    4. Unable to connect to internet (SingNet Broadband) (I)
    5. Unable to connect to internet (SingNet Broadband) (II)
    6. Annoying Warning Message from PS Guard, SpyAxe .....
    7. Very slow computer
    8. Unwanted PopUp - Porn Site, Casino, anti-virus etc

When computer is switched-on, nothing appears on the monitor

  1. Cannot hear the running fan, no light on the front panel
  2. Can hear the running fan, LED on the front panel is lighted.
  3. Can hear the running fan, LED on the front panel is lighted, and beep sound can be heard

Cannot hear the running fan, no light on the front panel

Observations:

  • Burnning smell
  • Press power switch again but nothing happens, the computer is totally “dead”.

Possible Causes:

  • No input current/voltage due to loose Power Cable
  • Faulty fuse.
  • Faulty Power Supply Unit

Solutions

  • Check all the power connections to ensure that they are tight.
  • Replace the faulty fuse
  • Replace the faulty power supply. Estimated hardware cost is S$50, for normal PC and S$100 for HP, ACER and Compaq PC. Charges exclude labour and transport.

Can hear the running fan, LED on the front panel is lighted

Observation:

  • Burnning smell

Possible Causes:

  • The motherboard is faulty.

Solutions

  • Replace the motherboard. Estimated cost is S$100 - S$200, excluding labour and transport.

Can hear the running fan, LED on the front panel is lighted, and beep sound can be heard

Possible causes

  • Motherboard is likely to be OK. Probably either the video or memory card is not installed properly. Three (3) short beeps indicate that the video card is not installed properly. Refer to your PC/ Motherboard manual for further information on beeping sound.

Solution

  • Remove and reinstall the video / memory card.

When computer is switched-on, something appears on the monitor but fail to start Windows

  1. Black Screen (BIOS screen)
  2. Blue Screen (windows dump)
  3. Windows loading screen, but nothing else
  4. Computer keeps “re-starting”

Black Screen (BIOS screen)

Related Issues:

  • Hardware failure: Hard disk, keyboard, mouse ...etc
  • “Non-bootable” media inserted: Floppy disk, Thumb-drive etc

Causes:

  • Unable to find boot drive, due to incorrect boot sequence in BIOS
  • Unable to find boot information in attached media like Thumb drive or floppy disk.
  • Unable to find boot information in hard disk, due to corrupted file system or faulty hard disk.

Solutions:

  • Check the BIOS setting
  • Remove the non-bootable media;
  • Replace the faulty device

Blue screen (windows dump)

  • Windows loading screen, but nothing happens
  • Computer keeps “re-starting”

Related Issues:

  • Computer “hang”during Windows start-up
  • Computer reboots, during Windows start-up

The possible causes:

  • Windows registry is corrupted
  • Non-compatible device driver
  • Corrupted File System
  • Hardware failure: RAM, hard-disk etc

Possible Solutions:

  • “Patch” the system
  • Re-install Windows
  • Format hard disk and re-install Windows
  • Replace hard disk and re-install Windows
  • Replace faulty hardware

When computer is switched-on, successfully starts Windows but....

    1. Unable to connect to USB Drives (Printer, Thumb drive, MP3...)
    2. Unable to connect to Internet (via RJ-45 / Ethernet card)
    3. Unable to connect to internet (Starhub Broadband)
    4. Unable to connect to internet (SingNet Broadband) (I)
    5. Unable to connect to internet (SingNet Broadband) (II)
    6. Annoying Warning Message from PS Guard, SpyAxe .....
    7. Very slow computer
    8. Unwanted Pop-up - Porn Site, Casino, Anti virus etc

Unable to connect to USB Drives (Printer, Thumb drive, MP3...)

Related Issues:

  • Printer fails to work after installing a new USB printer
  • Printer fails to work after reconnecting a USB printer
  • USB driver, such as thumb-drive, scanner, mp3 player fail to work

Causes

  • One of the most common mistake is the USB device is accidentally connected to RJ45 port instead of USB port

Solution

  • Unplug the USB cable from the RJ-45 port, and connect it to the USB port

Unable to connect to Internet (via RJ-45 / Ethernet card)

Related Issue:

Modem is working (all the lighta are OK), but cannot connect to internet.

Cause

  • Some of the older machines (used to connect to S-One or SingNet Magix) have both ethernet card and ATM card (both having RJ-45 socket). Sometimes the ethernet cable (from router/ modem) is accidentally connected to the ATM port instead of ethernet port, especially after re-wiring/ PC re-location.

Solution

  • Unplug the RJ-45 cable from the ATM port, and connect it to the Ethernet port. Please exercise discretion since both ports look alike)

Unable to connect to Internet (Starhub)

Related Issue:

  • After re-arranging the equipment (Modem & router), cannot get internet connection although all the cables are connected properly.

Cause

  • The Starhub modem needs to be reset.

Solution

  • Switch off the Starhub modem, wait for 1 minute and switch on again.

Unable to connect to Internet (SingNet), after adding a new telephone equipment/ line

Related Issue:

  • The broadband service always disconnects, whenever the telephone rings.

Cause

  • Micro-filter is missing.

Solution

  • Add a micro-filter to the newly installed device.

Unable to connect to Internet (SingNet), after re-arranging telephone cable / equipment

Related Issue:

  • The broadband internet is disconnected  whenever the telephone rings.

Cause

  • Micro-filter(s) is not connected properly. Some of the micro-filters have two sockets. One for the telephone and the other for the modem. Please ensure that the correct equipment is connected to the respective socket.

Solution

  • Re-connect micro-filter to the correct device.

Annoying Warning Message from PS Guard, SpyAxe .....

Related Issue:

  • Computer is infected by unwanted popup, after visiting certain web pages.

Cause

  • Your computer is infected by virus/adware/ spyware.

Solution

  • Most virus/ spyware/ adware can be removed by professional software such as Norton Anti-virus, Spybot, ad-aware etc. Please ensure that your virus definition file is always up to date. If you encounter any virus which  cannot be removed by these professional software, please contact us. We charge $80 - $100 for virus removal.

Very slow computer

Related Issue:

Cause

  • To run Windows XP, 256 MB RAM is the minimum requirement. Otherwise your PC will be very slow. We recommend 512 MB to run windows XP smoothly,

Solution

  • Use Task Manager to confirm your memory usage. Upgrade to 512 MB, if possible.

Unwanted Pop-up - Porn Site, Casino, anti-virus etc

Related Issue:

  • Computer is infected by unwanted pop-up

Cause

  • Your machine is infected with virus/ spyware/ adware.

Solution

  • Most spyware/ Adware can be removed by professional software such as norton anti-virus, AVG, Mcafee, Spybot, ad-aware. Please ensure that your virus definition file is always up to date. If you encounter any virus which cannot be removed by these professional software, please contact us. We charge $80 - $100 for virus removal.
